The global market for public cloud services is skyrocketing

Cloud

The public cloud services market is rapidly growing, according to Gartner. Even though the numbers are impressive, Gartner estimates that they can increase even further.

Here are the key points from Gartner’s survey (http://gtnr.it/2cgWiPK):

  • The global market for public cloud services will grow by 17%, reaching $208.6 billion, within this year. This is an increase of $30 billion since last year ($178 billion).
  • Gartner estimates that the biggest increase will come from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), which is expected to grow by 43% this year.
  • Software as a Service (SaaS), which is the oldest cloud segment, will increase half as IaaS, i.e. 21.7% in 2016, reaching $38.9 billion.

Conclusions

Let’s examine further what this Gartner data mean for this market. Firstly, it is evident that the market is growing exponentially and there are no signs of setbacks in the near future. Even though these numbers may sound huge, Gartner is convinced that they could be even bigger!

According to Gartner’s Research Director, Sid Nag, there is no doubt that the business world is showing a “big appetite” for cloud services. Naturally, there are still significant challenges for businesses, as they are taking this important step towards the cloud. Sid Nag believes that, despite the big percentage of estimated growth, a large number of businesses have not yet come up with specific plans for cloud services, which is hindering their competitiveness.

Another interesting finding is that some of the primary reasons for adopting the public cloud technology are IT modernization, cutting expenses, innovation and flexibility. In particular, public cloud services are being used to identify tactical advantages in terms of cutting costs and innovation, while also creating a modern IT environment that will serve as a strategic basis for future applications and digital business operations.

On the other hand, concern for data safety and privacy remains the biggest obstacle, regardless of the positive history in this field and the increased transparency offered by leading vendors. Gartner’s position in the cloud security issue is clear: public cloud services provided by leading vendors, are completely safe. The only challenge lies in ensuring that such services are safely used.
